The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:9-10 ESV
God is a constant & secure place for us to put our trust. Those experiencing oppression or times of trouble can run to Him to take refuge & find shelter in Him. God is our refuge & ever present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). David unpacks an important truth that is necessary for us to develop our trust in God. He stated that those who know God’s name put their trust in Him. Knowing God’s name is more than merely knowing what to specifically call God, rather it is knowing His character, it is knowing Him for who He is. The more one gets to know who God is the more they will trust Him, and all the names & titles of God revealed in Scripture help us to know God better. When God reveals Himself in Scripture as the Almighty God then it should lead us to trust that nothing is too hard for Him. When God reveals Himself as The One who forgives, then it leads us to trust that He will forgive our sin. When God reveals Himself as The Lord Our Righteousness, then it should lead us to trust that He is the one who makes us righteous. When God reveals Himself as The Lord Gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love then, it should lead us to trust that He loves us and He will tenderly care for us. As read through the Scripture this year take note of the names & titles that are attributed to God & that He attributes to Himself. In doing so you will growing in knowing God & trusting in Him. Mediate on those names & titles and ponder their implications to relationship with God. Use those different names & titles of God as fuel for your praise & adoration, as well as the springboard for your prayers.
